The life of faith is an adventure like none other. This coming January 16th, I will celebrate yet another birthday. They seem to come all too frequently these days. One thing that I never tire of is seeing how God leads us, no matter how old I get. There are turns and twists, unexpected surprises and discouraging situations. It reminds me of the eleventh chapter of the book of Hebrews in the New Testament.
The Old Testament Patriarch, Abraham, is an amazing example of this adventure of faith. I wonder if there were days in his old age when he would sit back and just be overwhelmed in gratitude for the twists and turns that God lead him on.
Sure there were times of doubt and uncertainty when he needed God’s reassurance of his plan. That sounds pretty familiar to me, how about you? There were times when he tried to force things and take matters into his own hands. There were times of questioning why God wanted him to do what he had asked him to do. From his days sitting in Ur of the Chaldees where he heard God’s voice to leave all that was familiar to him. Where he was headed he had no idea but he trusted God to lead him.
What strikes me about Abraham and the people of faith in that great chapter of the Bible is that they had their eyes fixed on God. They were willing to go on an adventure of faith with God in the lead because they trusted him! They kept moving in their spiritual lives having this as their motto, ” they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one.” For them it did not matter so much that they were called to suffer but what mattered was that they were living in the adventure of faith that God had called them to.
This adventure of faith with its twists and turns is not just about the adventure itself, there is a much bigger goal. The goal is expressed in Hebrews 11:6, “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” It is about pleasing God! It is about seeking him before anyone or anything else.
How goes the adventure for you? Is your attention fixed on the One who loves you and gave himself for you? If it is, according to God’s Word, you are in for a wonderful ride! A ride that will result in God receiving all the glory because at the end of the day that is our purpose.
