The article that I am about to write I could not have written 5 years ago. I believe that I suffered from an identity crisis as a Pastor. What is more, I believe the office of Pastor is suffering from an identity crisis. Between the power model C.E.O. type who demands allegiance, and the average church member who sits in the pew, the gap is deep and the gap is wide. There are Pastors who use their people to achieve fame among denominational leaders, and Pastors who struggle to gain the respect of the people in the pew. Willingness to Learn: I humbly recognize that there are many ways to do things and I am open and willing to learn what others can teach me.
God has used me in the areas of international missions in Church Planting to Spanish-speaking nations as well as through teaching in Argentina and Rio Grande Bible Institute Texas. A natural outflow of both of these areas has been writing a blog on a semi-regular basis (billfinch.org). I am passionate about modelling Christ in my daily life as well as developing godly leadership that cares for others as we follow God’s direction together.

Through amazing prayer support, God encouraged our people to grow in their relationship with their heavenly Father and each other. As a church we learned to share our faith with those in our community who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Our church became known as a place of refuge for all who are seeking a place to call home.

Together with my wife, Deb, we were blessed by God to raise missionary financial and prayer support to serve in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in the state of Texas. Our ministries centered on teaching as well as developing a struggling church to grow from a discouraged group of fifteen to an encouraged and excited group of seventy-five to eighty. I also was elected the chairman of our Field Council of missionaries for one term of service.

What a joy to teach young people from Latin America, theology, Bible, and practical Christian life issues. We formed great relationships with colleagues and students that last until today. This was a tremendous experience. Today, many of these students are living productive Christian lives serving God.

Leading with grace is rare today. I have noticed that whenever there is a rebellion from within the ranks that it usually comes from those who don’t think the leader is doing it right. There is a questioning of the leaders right to lead that often accompanies this type of situation. We have an illustration of this type of attitude in Old Testament Israel after they leave Egypt and take steps to enter the land that God promised them. Instead of staying the course and humbly following the leadership of Moses, upon whom God had many times given His sign of approval, these people took it upon themselves to steal the leadership from Moses.
When God gets set to do something special among us, he usually does so through by choosing people who would be judged the most unlikely of candidates. Some would even classify them as frail, needy and broken. I have been preparing this week to share with our church the vision statement that the elders have been praying about and working on. I have come to the conclusion that God is not looking for experts but rather those who are willing to follow Him completely and totally. Continue reading “Jars of Clay”
